After much consideration, the library has made the difficult decision to end our contract with the streaming service Hoopla, effective January 1, 2025. This is due to a quoted 452% price increase for 2025, which our operating budget simply cannot absorb. The Milwaukee County Federated Library System had previously paid for Hoopla. However, due to the significant increase, the system transferred the costs to individual libraries to determine whether to continue using this platform.
It's not commonly known, but Hoopla is a "pay-per-use" model. The average cost currently is $2.40/check out. The difficulty with a pay-per-use model is that the more popular the service becomes, the more expensive it is to maintain. Libraries nationwide are dropping Hoopla and other pay-per-use services due to the combination of ballooning costs because of increasing popularity and tighter budgets caused by inflation impacts.
